Feedburner – The feed does not have subscriptions by email enabled

I wanted to write a post on a Feedburner issue that was driving me crazy.. and from what I can see a lot of you out there as well.
It is to do with when you go to subscribe via email to your feeds the following error appears,

First of all you need to signup to Feedburner and burn your feed.
Once you have done that click on the Publicize tab,

Then click on Email Subscriptions,

Copy the generated code and paste it into a text editor,

Now in my case, my WordPress theme has an RSS email subscription component in the footer (yours may be different),

Now go to Appearance > Editor in WordPress,

As my RSS email subscription component is in the footer, I need to edit footer.php (yours may be different),

Next, I found the following piece of code in my footer.php file,
onsubmit=”window.open(‘http://feedburner.google.com/fb/a/mailverify?uri=<?php echo get_option(‘feedmail’); ?>’, ‘popupwindow’, ‘scrollbars=yes,width=550,height=520′);return true”>
.
I then went to my Feedburner code and copied the following,
onsubmit=”window.open(‘http://feedburner.google.com/fb/a/mailverify?uri=thesocialmediaguide’, ‘popupwindow’, ‘scrollbars=yes,width=550,height=520′);return true”>
.
I then copied this Feedburner code and pasted it over the code in the footer.php file.
.
So that it the first bit of copying and pasting out of the way.. one more to go..
.
I then found the following piece of code in my footer.php file,
<input type=”hidden” value=”<?php echo get_option(‘feedmail’); ?>” name=”uri”/><input type=”hidden” name=”loc” value=”en_US”/>
.
I then went to my Feedburner code and copied the following,
<input type=”hidden” value=”thesocialmediaguide” name=”uri”/><input type=”hidden” name=”loc” value=”en_US”/>
.
I then copied this Feedburner code and pasted it over the code in the footer.php file.
.
Click on <Update file> to save the changes.
Go back to your site to test everything works.
Enter your email address to subscribe,

Enter your email address,

The following should display,

After click on the confirmation link in your email address, then following will appear,

Done!
Everything is working as it should.

nice…my problem is resolved:D
grazie!
hi there, thank you very much for this tips, help me so much
nice tip…
Thank you very much. I followed your steps and it is now working. I did not have to copy the code since my theme already had it.
Much Thanks Matt. It took a while due to my type of theme, but it now works. Great job!
This whole thing is so confusing. My client sent me their FeedID code number. I entered it into my WordPress Admin in the Appearance/Widget section/Header Right/Genesis eNews & Update. We're using a real estate theme. I entered their FeedID code, went back to the site, entered an email address, got that same popup box that says " does not have subscriptions enabled…" So the client send me some code which they acquired from feedburner.google.com
I looked at header.php but no where is there what you say here "onSubmit"
still battling, copied and pasted code into "sidebar", made the two changes to code as indicated, saved, went to my site filled out email address, hit send. "The feed does not have subscriptions by email enabled" popped up again, help!!!!
Thanks! This was helpful.
thanks for helping me out

Could not for the life of me figure this out. Thanks for the great directions.
I have tried subscribing to your website's RSS feed, and I get an error saying that "can't find feed".. which means that your website *isn't* creating an RSS feed. Basically you can't use Feedburner, unless your site can create an RSS feed. The first step would be to get whoever created your site, to add in functionality whereby it can create an RSS feed.. or move your site to a platform like WordPress where RSS feeds are automatically generated. Until this happens you won't be able to enable your visitors to subscribe to your RSS feed..
Matthew, I am so new to this that I am unclear how to make Feedburner work at all. everyone seems to understand how this program works but I need it explained to me from the beginning. What do I need it for and then how do I get it to work, I have read everything Google has written to explain it but something is still not connecting in my feeble brain. All I want is a way for my feed to show up in 1. other people's email box, 2. on my website, and 3. so that people who read my blog can share it with others with a clickable link. Is Feedburner the tool for this? I am so confused.
No worries mate.. glad it helped you out.————————————————–

I screwed around trying to get the email subscription to work for a couple of hours before I found your post. It took about 5 minutes with your help. Thanks much.
I have successfully set up the email subscription since I can see that I have email subscribers. However, I have entered new posts and they are not receiving an email regarding new updates. I myself subscribed via email to test it out and have not received anything regarding updates. Any ideas?
Glad to hear it worked out for you. ________________________

Hi MimiThanks for the email. I tried subscribing to your email updates and was successfully presented with the pop-up confirming my email address.. then I also got a confirmation email, which says to me that side of your feedburner setup is all fine..All I can suggest is to double-check that the time zone is correct (for wherever you are based).. if it is, maybe try deactivating the delivery options service.. logout of Feedburner.. then log back in and reactivate it. Give that a try.Matt
Hi-I have a similar problem but slightly different:I set up a Google Reader Account, along with a Feedburner account. Both seem to be working fine separately and together. My feeds are updated on both sites, and my email subscription page on my (self made) blog seems to be working fine. I subscribed myself to make sure that I will receive updates as a test. I show up as the only subscriber at the moment. However, when I tested a new feed, I did not receive an email of the update. The new feeds show on both Google Reader and Feedburner, but no notification. I Checked the time of delivery in my emails and set to 9am-11am, still no email during those times… If anyone can help, I would much appreciate it.Thanks.
thanks man 4 your post… finally I got it!!! I've noticed that there is often a mistake in template code at this line:action="http://feedburner.google.com/fb/a/mailverify"in several templates I saw an "…./emailverify" instead of "…./mailverify"ciao Anto
I think Feedblitz might be what you are looking for.. http://www.feedblitz.com/
feed burner now requires you have a GOOGLE account and allow Google to screen your content. Is there anything out there that does not require google involvement?
Hi againThe problem is not the RSS Feed button. It works and was quite simple to set up. The difficulty is on the widget that allows the email subscription. They talk about the FEED ID with digits only. I have a Feed Id but made of digits and letters.
Hi PedroI think you may have set it up wrong. If you hover your mouse over my RSS icon, its location is,http://feeds2.feedburner.com/thesocialmediaguideIf you hover your mouse over your RSS icon (on your site), its location is,http://feeds.feedburner.com/http/feeds2feedburn….... I believe your Feedburner RSS URL should be, http://feeds2.feedburner.com/maverickanismblogs…..You need to login to your Feedburner account, select your feed, then click on "Edit Feed Details".. and you should then see your 'Feed Address'..
HiI´m having loads of difficulty in enabling subscriptions by email. I read everywhere the feed id only contains digits, but the one I find has letters as well "5j4inao5lin8d20r18jur667u0".Don't know what do do. Would appreciate your help. Thanks
Glad this guide helped you out Rodricus. Cool site by the way!Matt________________________
Just wanted to tell you thanks for posting this. You may have solved this problem back in May, but it's still relevant now. I was sooooo frustrated by the situation you described above. Thanks again. Check out my site whenever you get the chance.Rod "The Success Coach" Kirbyhttp://www.rodkirby.com
Thanks for the handy instructions. I was having this issue and now it's all fixed!
Initially I found that the Feedburner email subscriptions worked fine with the Yaimdoo theme.. until I double checked it sometime after and found that it was 'broken'.. hence this guide.
in the yamidoo theme, you don't need to work with the code. Just enable email in feedburner, and enter your Feedburner in the Yamadoo configuration panel……..very easy !!I have to say though that I find the 2 steps of confirmation too much. First in a popup on the website, and then again veryifing from your email
Hi AkayoSo what happens when you enter your email address when trying to subscribe to your feeds?
me too- i did exactly what you mentioned and now i have two extra boxes in my Feedburner box!
I just tried exactly what is was told and still not working
It is a good thing that I found out about this from my reader since I had no idea this was not working.
