How to Stop Direct Message Spam on Twitter

It got to a point where I had lost control of my Twitter inbox as it was completely filled with Direct Message (DM) Spam.

You know the type.. messages about MafiaWars and Farmville, free gifts, making money, poker, investing, how get 1000′s of followers, etc.

So as a result of rarely checking it, I was missing out on genuine Direct Messages.

Building on a previous post on How to Stop Twitter Spam Followers.. this time, I wanted to take back control of my inbox and get rid of DM spam.

Here are some tips I would like to share.. on how you can reclaim your Twitter inbox.

Auto DMs by SocialOomph

SocialOomph users can automate their Twitter accounts to automatically send welcome DMs to their new followers.

As a past or potential recipient of those DMs, SocialOomph offers you a super-easy way to opt-out and never again receive an automated welcome DM sent by SocialOomph.

To do this please follow these steps:

• Log in to Twitter then follow @OptMeOut,

• Wait for @OptMeOut to follow you back (@OptMeOut will send you a DM),

• Send a Direct Message to @OptMeOut (You can write whatever you want in the DM, it does not matter),

• After sending the DM, unfollow @OptMeOut (This way your opting out remains private since you won’t be in the list of @OptMeOut’s followers.. you will be unfollowed as well)

SocialOomph will, within a few minutes of you sending your DM, stop sending you any further automated welcome DMs.

You will receive one last DM to confirm that you’ve been opted-out,

You do not need an account at SocialOomph to opt-out.. anybody on Twitter can opt-out.

Poll Pigeon

Poll Pigeon is another service that allows users to send auto DMs to share polls with you.

Click the button below to opt out of direct messages sent to you by Poll pigeon users,

Then click on <Allow>,

You have just opted out and will now no longer receive direct messages from POLLpigeon users,

To completely uninstall POLLpigeon, go to Twitter > Settings > Connections and Revoke Access to POLLpigeon,

Done!

You have been opted out of POLL Pigeon Direct Messages.

LOLquiz

LOLquiz is another service where users can DM quizzes and games to you.

To opt-out of receiving DMs from LOLquiz click here,

Then click on <Allow>,

To completely uninstall LOLquiz, go to Twitter > Settings > Connections and Revoke Access to LOLquiz.

Done!

You have been opted out of LOLquiz Direct Messages.

Society.me

Society.me is a service that allows you to ask questions.

Their most popular and annoying app is one that lets your Facebook friends find you on Twitter.

To opt out of this click on,

Click on <Allow>,

To completely uninstall Society.me, go to Twitter > Settings > Connections and Revoke Access to Society.me.

Done!

You have been opted out of Society.me Direct Messages.

Finally..

You have now taken the first steps in reclaiming your Twitter inbox.

Hopefully these tips will help to reduce a large amount Direct Message spam you receive on Twitter!
